Dam Road talks could lead to reopening

Ryan Slabaugh
Summit County correspondent
Aspen, CO Colorado

FRISCO, Colo. ” Negotiations between Summit County and Denver Water could lead to the reopening of the Dillon Dam Road, according to Sheriff John Minor.

Talks between the two groups are ongoing, and no timeline has been set for the agreement, though Minor said they are trying to move as rapidly as possible.

Minor said he was pleased with the tone and focus of a meeting last Friday, but added that trust between the two organizations is still an issue.

Another meeting is being scheduled for this week, when county officials again will propose reopening the road. Other specifics about the negotiations are not being released.

On July 9, Denver Water abruptly closed the Dam Road after receiving new information from undisclosed state and federal agencies regarding the dam’s vulnerability.

Since then, local and federal authorities have reported there is no impending threat to the dam, though they understand the dam’s vulnerabilities and the catastrophic consequences from a structural failure.

“We’d need to have all three in place ” threat, vulnerability and consequence ” for us to feel closing the road entirely is reasonable,” Minor said.

County, town and local emergency officials continue to stress that unimpeded access on the Dam Road is imperative to emergency response.
