Cycling club mountain bike races begin

Aspen Times Staff Report

The first mountain bike race of the Aspen Cycling Club’s summer series will be held this evening.

The first mountain bike race party at the Cantina will follow.

The Rio Grande time trial for mountain bikes begins at the east end of Jaffee Park, located at the intersection of McLain Flats Road and River Road.

The course climbs a single track to the Rio Grande Trail, then heads east on the Rio Grande toward Aspen. The course finish is at the bottom of Cemetery Lane, where the trail comes out of the woods into the park at Slaughterhouse Bridge.

Course length is 4.3 miles with a total elevation gain of 344 feet.

The time trial start is at 6 p.m.

In the time-trial format, each competitor will start separately. Starts will be in 30-second intervals.

Limited parking is available at Jaffee Park.

There is no advance signup; racers must register and pay at the race start between 5:15 and 5:45 p.m. Entry fee is $5 for Aspen Cycling Club members.

Members who prepaid for the entire series prior to the season must check in before the race start. Nonmembers may participate in four races without joining the club.

The Rio Grande time trial is also a Kids’ Series race. The six-race Kids’ Series is for children 8 to 13.

Volunteers are also needed to help stage the race; those interested in volunteering may call Kevin Wilson at 925-7970. More information and updates on Wednesday’s race are available by calling the Aspen Cycling Club hotline, 925-7334.

The season-opening party will be held following the race from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Cantina in Aspen.

The Aspen Cycling Club is a local, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cycling in the Roaring Fork Valley. Races are held every Wednesday through Aug. 30.
