Cycling alive and well in Aspen

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:

This past weekend Aspen hosted two fabulous cycling events that harkened back to the days of The Coors Classic. On Saturday, close to 500 people participated in the Ride for the Pass in support of the Independence Pass Foundation. On Sunday, the Aspen Cycling Club hosted the return, after a 12-year hiatus, of the downtown criterium.

The criterium would not have been possible without the support of the city of Aspen Recreation Department. Thanks also to Charlie Tarver and Danny DiMaria for designing a fun and challenging course that provided plenty of entertainment for racers and spectators alike.

These athletic events along with display of the Vietnam War memorial in Rio Grande Park, reaffirms Walter Paepcke’s vision of Aspen being a place to nourish the body, mind and spirit.
