Current museum site is workable

Dear Editor:

It is time to wake up to reality about the Aspen Art Museum.

The Aspen Art Museum’s director, Heidi, has been shown drawings and given information that clearly show that the Museum can be expanded at the present site. Is the museum so desperate that they must distort the true facts?

Quoting her from the April 12 edition of the Aspen Times Weekly, “numerous studies indicate the current site is unworkable because of riparian, water table and historic issues.”

Show us these studies.

There are no riparian problems. Other buildings exist along the river. The 100-year flood plain is not an issue, because the building can be slightly elevated.

The water table is not an issue, as there is no need for deep excavations. The building’s foundations can stand on top of the ground like we do, with our feet.

Yes, the existing building is historic and must be honored and respected. This is easily done by using the U.S. Secretary of Interior’s design guidelines for connecting and separating an historic building from a new structure by

using a glass element that both joins and separates.

The proposed new museum building is an energy hog, a glass box (greenhouse), which is not appropriate for Aspen.

Please vote “NO” on Proposition 1, in order to protect our community values.
