An Eagle County judge signed a warrant Monday for the arrest of a man who Basalt police suspect made a homemade bomb.
Dustin Brown, 28, of Basalt, will be arrested for manufacturing an explosive device, a Class 4 felony, according to Basalt police Sgt. Aaron Munch. Brown was arrested in Grand Junction on Sunday and is being held in the Mesa County Jail. At some point, he will be transferred to Eagle County where he will be advised on the charge, against him, according to Munch.
Brown was in a domestic dispute that resulted in a car crash on Highway 82 at Emma Curve early Sunday morning, authorities said. He called 911 but fled the scene. Pitkin County deputies arrested a woman who was identified as the driver of the vehicle for suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
While in custody in Pitkin County Jail, the woman told authorities later Sunday morning that Brown had made a bomb that was in their residence in the Sagewood Condominiums area of Basalt, Munch said. The woman gave consent to Basalt and Eagle County law enforcement officials to enter the residence. A bomb squad from Grand Junction was called to the scene. The squad placed the bomb in a container, hauled it off site and dismantled it.
Munch said Brown’s intent with the bomb is unknown at this time. A report about the incident will be sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as the FBI to see if they want to pursue a federal case, he said.
Brown was arrested in Grand Junction without incident. It was discovered that he had a warrant for his arrest out of North Carolina in relation to a transporting-of-drugs case, Munch said. It was unclear if he failed to appear for a court hearing or failed to comply with a court sentence, Munch said.
The prosecutors in North Carolina and Eagle County will have to decide the timing on pursuing charges against Brown, though Munch said it is likely Eagle County will act first since Brown is in the region.
