Crested Butte’s McAuley wins Summer GT

Gunnison's Brian Smith powers through Sunday's Grand Traverse mountain bike race, a nearly 40-mile trek that started in Aspen and finished in Crested Butte. Smith won the race in 4 hours, 36 minutes, 14.7 seconds.

The third annual Icebreaker Grand Traverse Mountain Run & Bike race — the summer segment of the popular Winter GT — concluded Sunday with the mountain bike portion of the event, a nearly 40-mile trek from Aspen to Crested Butte. Gunnison’s Brian Smith won the bike race with a time of 4 hours, 36 minutes, 14.7 seconds, with Jennifer Smith, his wife, finishing as the top woman in 5:27:26.7, eighth overall.

Crested Butte’s own Mike McAuley took seventh in the mountain bike race and was named the two-day dual sport individual champion after taking 24th overall in Saturday’s run — which went from Crested Butte to Aspen — and seventh among dual-sport competitors. The top dual-sport woman was Canada’s Jen Segger. Basalt’s Luke Demuth finished 11th overall in the dual-sport category.

Registration for the 2017 GORE-TEX Grand Traverse winter race will open Dec. 1. For more information go to
