Credit card spree lands man in jail

For his role in carrying out a highly-complex credit-card fraud scheme in Aspen in February, a Los Angeles man received 90 days in jail and a five-year probationary sentence in Pitkin County’s 9th Judicial District Court Monday.

Ricardo Henriquez, 31, must also complete an intensive outpatient treatment program for substance abuse, abstain from alcohol and drugs, pay court costs, fees and restitution, and complete 100 hours of useful public service, as ordered by Judge J.E. DeVilbiss.

On June 7, Henriquez pleaded guilty to a pair of class-five felonies: unauthorized use of a financial transaction device and conspiracy to commit theft.

“I really hope that you realize that you dodged a bullet,” DeVilbiss said to Henriquez, after issuing him a probationary sentence.

Roberto Guedea, Henriquez’s co-defendant and apparent ring- leader of the credit-card scam, was sentenced to five years in prison on May 18.

Henriquez, Guedea, and Jorge Frias, whose case is still pending, apparently obtained fake credit cards along with fake driver’s licenses to back up use of the cards, before traveling to Aspen for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. The trio allegedly racked up more than $4,000 in fraudulent credit-card charges at several local businesses before police were alerted to their activities.
