Crash claims life of Rifle man

RIFLE ” A Rifle-area man was killed Sunday evening in a one-vehicle accident near the town.
He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Justin Davis, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Davis was arrested for vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving under revocation. He was treated for minor injuries at Grand River Medical Center in Rifle and was taken into custody when he was released.
According to the State Patrol, a 21-year-old man riding in the front passenger seat was killed in the accident. His name has yet to be released.
Charlie Steerman, 22, was riding in the back seat and suffered serious injuries; he was taken to Grand River Medical Center where he was expected to be released Monday.
All three men involved in the accident are from the Rifle area; none of them were wearing seat belts, according to the patrol.
The crash occurred on County Road 294, just east of the Rifle city limits.

The 1992 Mazda that police believe Davis was driving was headed east when it went off the right side of the roadway at a high rate of speed. The car hit a tree, spun around clockwise and stopped on its wheels, facing south, according to the patrol.
The patrol is investigating the accident; alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors, according to a press release issued by the agency.
