County OKs use of track for year

Naomi Havlen

The Pitkin Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved winter operations at the Woody Creek race track at its meeting Wednesday. The applicants – operators of the Aspen Winter Driving Experience – will come back in front of the board in one year to evaluate operations at the track. (See related story, “School puts speedsters on snow.”)Although there were some concerns by commissioners about the noise of the operations, the program’s representatives, Grady Olson and Tom Dalessandri, said drivers would be driving cars with mufflers, rather than racing cars.Michael Owsley, commissioner elect for Pitkin County and also a representative of the Woody Creek Caucus, said caucus members had a lengthy discussion with Olson and Dalessandri about their plans. He said the caucus did not have any problems with the driving program as long as the county’s planners were prepared to review the program each year to make sure there are no negative impacts.Naomi Havlen’s e-mail address is nhavlen@aspentimes.com
