Counting down

Dear Editor: Suppose it’s fortunate for New Yorkers that there’s a three- or four-block security bubble around the Republican Convention, as the stench emanating from the Garden surely would rival a Bangkok outhouse. Having to finally put their dismal record on display – illegal Iraqi war, record deficits, most job loss since Herbert Hoover, trashing of our environment, tax cuts for the top 1 percent – they’ve resorted to what they usually use: boatloads of spin and relentless tautologies.Bush & Co. continues, as they have for three years, to exploit the tragedy of 9/11 for political gain. By conflating 9/11 and the disastrous decision to invade Iraq, they hope to confuse the American public. It’s astonishing they don’t see (or choose not to) the catastrophic mistake made in Mesopotamia. Seeing that Boy-Bush basically bet his (failed) presidency on Iraq, what choice do they have?As the 400,000 patriots who marched Seventh Avenue last Sunday demonstrate, the American people (or at least the smart ones) are aroused and are fed up with our “darn good liar.”So R’s, party hard in NYC. Enjoy your “cracker” speakers – Zell Miller, Cheney, Bubba. Raise your “Quagmire Accomplished” banner amidst the dropping balloons and confetti, and don’t forget to turn off the lights, as we (the rest of us) start our 60-day countdown on our national nightmare.Ben NewellAspen
