Counties agree to build Crested Butte-Carbondale trail

Pitkin County is set to sign an agreement with Gunnison County to complete a 74-mile trail between Carbondale and Crested Butte.”It’s good to see this kind of regional trail effort,” said Dale Will, Pitkin County’s open space and trails director. “To some degree the [intergovernmental agreement] is kind of a working understanding. Its most immediate utility will be when we seek grants and permits. We’ll demonstrate to the rest of the world that this trail is in the public interest.”Gunnison County has already signed the agreement, and Pitkin County will likely do so today.Parts of the trail have already been completed, though most stretches don’t have a timeline for construction. The agreement is just another step in seeing that the trail will be built. Carbondale started building the first pieces of a trail along Highway 133 in the mid-1990s. Now the county is obtaining a permit to extend the trail 4.3 miles from Snowmass Drive, where it currently ends, to Thompson Creek. The trail, which has been talked about in idea stages for decades, will be paved from Carbondale to Redstone and soft surface from Redstone to Crested Butte. “It’s a significant step,” Will said. “Now the counties will be working toward the same objective.”Joel Stonington’s e-mail address is jstonington@aspentimes.com
