Council should head West

The Aspen business/retail interests and the Aspen City Council, especially Aspen City Councilwoman Rachel Richards, just don’t get it when it comes to revitalizing and keeping alive the downtown central core.

I attended a significant part of the Aspen City Council study session on Tuesday and read “Building heights, infill in general, stymie council” (Aspen Times, July 16).

Both groups are stymied because it seems they don’t keep up with what’s happening and like communicating with squirrels if and when they journey to who knows where when they leave Aspen for a business trip or vacation.

Go to Santa Monica, Calif., to see The Third Street Promenade alive and jumping with people beginning at noon every day, with the nights especially fun and exciting.

Beverly Hills, Calif., is crying the blues for many years, now that it can’t really compete with this Santa Monica outdoor pedestrian mall when it comes to attracting shoppers’ dollars.

People are willing and eager to pass through Beverly Hills and zip by.

The Aspen City Council would benefit from traveling to Santa Monica to see and experience how things are really done to keep people and crowds coming in good and bad economic as Beverly Hills business/retail cries the blues.
