Dear Editor:

I need to correct my letter that appeared on Jan. 10. Hamas’ founding statements, in 1987, included not recognizing Israel. It now is open to recognizing Israel and has stated so in 2006 and, most recently, in 2008 in talks with former President Jimmy Carter.

Hamas agreed to a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital if approved by a Palestinian vote. Plus, they would accept Israel as a neighbor. Since Israel has moved approximately 150,000 Jews into the Palestinian side of the border, it has made such an agreement impossible.
