Cops seek teens in Basalt hay fire

Staff Report

Eagle County sheriff’s deputies want to talk to two teenagers seen near the site of a hay fire in Basalt on Tuesday night.

The fire, located in a field near the Eagle Crest Nursery in Basalt, started around 8 p.m. and took firefighters until about 11:30 p.m. to control, said Basalt Fire Chief Scott Thompson. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, he said.

“It’s definitely suspicious,” Thompson said. “Bales of hay just don’t start on fire by themselves.”

He said a person in the area at the time reported seeing two teenage boys on top of some of the 100 large bales of hay, which were stacked three high in the field. The person also saw the two boys run away from the hay bales before the fire started, Thompson said.

The boys are between the ages of 12 and 14 years old, said Todd Sauer, Eagle County sheriff’s deputy.

All 100 bales were ruined in the fire after firefighters put sprinklers on them Tuesday night, Thompson said. The fire was still smoldering Wednesday.
