Consider the impacts of calendar change
December 13, 2010
I write this to encourage you to slow down your evaluation of the merits of a year-round school calendar. As a parent of a junior and freshman students and a homeowner in the Aspen School District, I question our district’s change to a year-round calendar.
Our family is having a successful academic, social and developmental experience in our schools from K1 through 11, and I have not seen evidence that this change would create an advantage to our current programs. However, I do see disadvantages and concerns with this change to academics, sports and student development, as well as unfortunate restrictions on families, students and school employees to experience summers as they choose or need. I am also concerned about how a year-round program would not but increase our school’s financial expenses in operations and salaries.
Please allow the school community, students, parents, faculty, support staff and taxpayers the opportunity to fully understand and respond to your proposal. This should be an exploratory process, with enough forums and discussions for a complete understanding by all parties before changes are made.
Congratulations to our school’s students, faculty, administration, and to you as members of the BOE on the recent honor of Accredited With Distinction recognition awarded our schools from the Colorado Department of Education. Which leads me to ask, why rush to change a system that is being recognized as highly successful?
