Conservation group protests proposed Colorado energy leases

Aspen, CO Colorado

DENVER ” A conservation group has filed a protest objecting to proposed oil and gas leases on 83,000 acres of federal land in Colorado.

The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership says the land proposed for energy development includes key sage grouse habitat, big-game winter range, and migration routes and habitat for Colorado River cutthroat trout.

Leases will be offered on nearly 100,000 acres of federal land in a Feb. 12 auction by the Bureau of Land Management in Denver. Federal officials recently withdrew about 33,000 acres because some of the parcels are on roadless national forest land the state wants to protect.

The BLM will decide on any protests before issuing leases.
