Dear Editor:Taking this opportunity, news as public forum, to send a big thank you to Alex Helprin of Aspen Peak magazine for picking up the ball and running with it in regard to our friend, longtime local and jazz musician, Dave Schappert. In collaboration with the Dogwood Grill/Joe Munoz and Thea Bent and the National Jam Foundation, with Dan Sadowsky at the helm, a real good party was held to honor Mr. Schappart. The event, held at the Dogwood Grill in Basalt where Dave, Jeanie Walla and Tim Fox played jazz once a week all winter, was filled with good food and friends listening to an amazing array of local musicians. A special thank you to Walt Smith, who played the early shift. And thanks to Jan Garret and JD Martin, Jon Michel, Chris Banks and Terry Bannon, Bob Levy, Tom Paxton, Jeanie Walla, Tim Fox and Dave Schappart. Thank you to Steve Cole, Walter Hanselmann and David Bluefield – they came ready to play but we ran out of night.Peak magazine’s Sarah and Marlene helped make this a success, not to mention the crew at the Dogwood. To quote Wynton Marsalis, “The world is always ready for everything, all you have to do is play music with passion and feeling, and people will connect.”Thanks for the connection.Nancy KellyBasalt
