Conflicting messages

I have recently read in the Aspen newspapers that the City Council is considering offering free on-the-street parking to hybrid autos. This would send a positive statement regarding Aspen’s position on the environment and pollution control. This action is to be applauded.

Now, Aspen is considering a proposal for a private condominium garage at 707 E. Hyman St. Approval would send a negative message regarding Aspen and the environment.

It says that if you are wealthy enough, you need not be concerned with the environment and pollution. You can buy yourself one or any number of parking spaces without regard to public interest.

If this private condominium garage were approved, it could “grandfather” a conflict with any future environmental policy that the city of Aspen might wish to pursue.

The proposed private condominium garage requires variances from existing codes and height restrictions. These restrictions have served Aspen well over the years, keeping the town unique and vital.

It would be ironic if the first example of “infill” would be a private condominium parking garage that would facilitate people living in the “sprawl” having a “second” parking space in town.

In the quest to maintain vitality, Aspen should be careful of that it wishes for. In the off-season, think empty private parking garage in the heart of Aspen.

Does anyone, other than the developer, really believe this is the best for Aspen?
