Community space is important

Dear Editor:

In response to Ms. Junee Kirk’s letter of Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, which wrongfully accuses Aspen Art Museum staff of disseminating inaccurate information regarding the former Youth Center ” none of the Aspen Art Museum’s petition-gatherers have made any claims or judgments on the use of that space other than its viability as an opportunity for a revitalized civic space.

Ms. Kirk does rightfully illuminate a pressing need for more community space that every citizen of Aspen can access on a year-round basis. Both a new Aspen Art Museum and the former power plant that currently houses the Aspen Art Museum would represent a significant increase in available community space for a variety of potential uses ” all of which we are eager to pursue with our fellow citizens as part of the ongoing discussion.

With more than 24,500 visitors in the last 12 months and more than 1,000 active members, the Aspen Art Museum is a resource that faces challenges related to overuse that everyone within the Roaring Fork Valley and involved with the museum understands all too well.

The current petition being circulated is an effort to demonstrate broad-based community support for further dialogue and the democratic process that we are hoping will result from it this May. To date, more than 1,500 have signed.
