Physics center to host two lectures at the Wheeler

The Aspen Center for Physics will host two upcoming lectures at the Wheeler Opera House.

Today at 5:30 p.m., John Preskill, of Caltech, will talk about “Quantum Computing and the Entanglement Frontier.”

“By exploiting quantum entanglement, quantum computers should be able to solve otherwise intractable problems, with far-reaching applications to cryptology, materials science and medicine. I’m less weird than a quantum computer, and easier to understand,” he said.

Subir Sachdev, of Harvard University, will speak on March 18 at 5:30 p.m. on the topic of “Quantum Entanglement and Superconductivity.” It turns out that entanglement, what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance” — the feature of quantum theory where measurement of one electron instantaneously determines the state of another distant electron — also offers important insights into superconductivity.

Both lectures will be preceded at 4:30 p.m. by the Physics Cafe.

Aspen Historical Society announces intern deadline

The deadline to apply for summer internships at the Aspen Historical Society is Saturday.

Interns will participate in NAI Interpretive Training certification, site management at two in-town museums and two historic ghost towns, summer programs and special events. The seasonal, full-time position includes a stipend and housing.

History, archaeology or a related field are recommended. Visit http://www.aspenhistory.org under “Intern Opportunities” or call 970-925-3721, ext. 104.
