Commissioners approve alcohol outside Sundeck on Aspen Mountain
Pitkin County commissioners Wednesday approved expanding the area where people can drink alcohol at the Sundeck atop Aspen Mountain.
The request from the Aspen Skiing Co. to modify its liquor license will allow wedding guests and others at the Sundeck to sip an alcoholic beverage within the newly landscaped area in front of the building up to the walkway, as well as at the “wedding deck” on the west side of the facility and on the deck leading to the gondola on the other side.
“Having been at a wedding reception (at the Sundeck) this summer, everyone was outside with their drinks looking at the sunset,” Commissioner Steve Child said. “I would anticipate your guests would want to be outside.”
Commissioners Patti Clapper and Rachel Richards also were supportive of the change.
“It’s a beautiful, beautiful place to have a celebration,” Clapper said.
Richards commended Skico for responsible use of the liquor license in the past — including a modification that allowed a “champagne cart” in 2012.
“I think this is appropriate for this venue,” Richards said.
The modification doesn’t change the Sundeck’s hours of operation or anything else, said Simon Chen, managing director of The Little Nell.
For ski mountain weddings, Skico offers the Sundeck at Aspen Montain, Elk Camp and Lynn Britt Cabin at Snowmass, the Cliffhouse and Buttermilk Mountain Lodge at Buttermilk and Cloud Nine and Merry-Go-Round at Aspen Highlands, according to the company’s website.
