Commentary was out of line

This letter is in response to Mr. Allyn Harvey’s column on Aug. 19. As a town of Basalt resident and working with the River Days committee, I and a number of people were offended by your column.

Both Nina Storey and Buckwheat loved playing in our town and could not say enough nice things about our crowds and hospitality. The event is a community event for everyone, and I have not heard any negative comments. I do not see you volunteering your time to help put this event on.

To call Basalt a lame town is making a big statement about the whole town. This valley is a whole and we do not compare our fair to Carbondale’s.

We’re wondering how you learned to count. Several people who do a lot of fairs and music events estimated 550 people on Saturday and close to 1,000 on Sunday. Our festival did well in all senses, from income to what the artists were saying.

Carbondale has a great fair and has many more years in this; we are still learning. For you to put down fellow neighbors (who, by the way, are volunteering their time) is out of line.

If you think we are all IZOD shirt-type people, that shows the only time you have visited Basalt was that weekend. We are a community of a lot of faces, and that is what this festival is all about – for the community, by the community.

Maybe you should be on the other end of the spectrum and work three 14-hour days and all the prep time (since January) to put an event on. You really put a lot of people and their hard work in the gutter.
