Colorado gas debate flares over well-site estimate
September 2, 2009
DENVER – An energy company has told investors there are up to 3,200 potential drilling sites on federal land on western Colorado’s Roan Plateau, prompting renewed criticism from environmental groups.
An attorney for the environmental groups says that would be 15 times more sites than the Bureau of Land Management included in its plans.
Bill Barrett Corp. listed the 3,200 sites in a June prospectus. Company officials say they were using data from a BLM environmental impact statement, and that they don’t necessarily plan that many sites.
A BLM spokesman declined to comment because the environmental impact statement is being challenged in court.
Environmental groups are suing to block the drilling plan, saying the impact statement was inadequate.
