Colorado Department of Agriculture issues warning about packages of mystery seeds arriving in mailboxes

Coloradans are reporting an unusual mail delivery: unsolicited packages of seeds.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture on Monday issued a warning about the seeds, saying they should not be planted. People have reported that they received the unknown seeds in packages that look like they have jewelry or other items in them, according to an agency news release. The unwanted seeds look like they’re coming from China and other countries.

Although seemingly harmless, the seeds could be invasive and introduce diseases to plants as well as harm livestock, according to the department.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection and state agriculture department are working to stop any banned seeds from getting into the United States and ask that anyone who gets these unsolicited packages contact the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Plant Industry Division at cda_nursery@state.co.us or (303) 548-5333.
