The death of John F. Kennedy Jr. is not expected to interrupt President Bill Clinton’s visit to Aspen this weekend.
The president and first lady will attend a Mass for Kennedy on Friday in New York City. The son of former President John F. Kennedy died last Friday when his private plane plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha’s Vineyard.
Clinton will fly to Aspen later in the day, according to the White House press office. Whether Hillary Clinton will join him has yet to be decided.
“We have no final official word on whether she’s coming, but we hope she will,” said Pitkin County Democratic Party chairwoman Camilla Auger.
The president will be in town from Friday night through Sunday morning to attend political fund-raising events, including one at Sen. Diane Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) second home that is meant to reward some of the Democratic Party’s most generous supporters. Clinton has yet to schedule any time to meet with the public.
The president’s visits to Aspen have generated a fair amount of animosity from local residents and elected officials. When Clinton came last year, he spent all of his time fund raising and none of it in the community.
A White House spokeswoman said he has purposefully scheduled a large amount of free time. She declined to say whether he would use any of it to meet local residents.
