Clarifying the library questions
In the interest of clarification on the Basalt Regional Library questions, 4B and 4C, I would like to make three points.
First, Question 4B is a mill levy increase requesting money for general maintenance and operational costs to run the library, pay the staff, stock the shelves with books, newspapers, magazines, books on tape and CDs, everything that you would expect to find in a library.
Question 4C is a bond issue asking for the bricks and mortar money for the capital costs of building a new library and expanding the existing Lions Park facility. Bonds are sold to finance the building projects and are paid off with property taxes in 20 years.
Second, the library in Lions Park will remain in operation. It is not scheduled to be shut down, except for planned expansion and remodel period of four to five months.
Third, there is no land left available in old town Basalt to build a new large library in a timely manner and at a fiscally responsible price.
