Nervous as she was, having not even made into the finals for her inaugural X Games appearance in 2005, Bidez finished fourth this year ” the best result of her career ” behind Japan’s Soko Yamaoka (88.00) in third and Australia’s Torah Bright (90.00) in second and the winner, 2002 Olympic gold medalist Kelly Clark (93.33).

As Bidez landed the second 900 spin of her career in her second run, backing it up with a 540 and a backside 720, Clark could only shake her head at the 18-year-old. But nobody was more surprised or pleased with the big trick than Bidez herself.

Only a handful of female riders even attempt the 900.

“The first time I ever tried a 9 was yesterday,” she said. “The first time I ever landed it was in the finals today. I’m just in awe, just speechless. I picked a really good time to land it for the first time. At the top of the pipe, all of a sudden, I had this good feeling.”

After Bidez finished her run, a group of spectators approached her and expressed their feeling that she “got robbed” on not landing on the podium as the only rider to pull a 9 Saturday. Bidez, however, knows that there will be more to come.

“I don’t even care about the podium,” she said. “I’m just so glad I landed that run. Hopefully this means that I’m going uphill.”
