City won’t reap tax ‘windfall’

Dear Editor:

In response to a recent letter to the editor, the city of Aspen will not be taking advantage of the “property tax windfall” in 2010, either for the general fund mill levy or the stormwater runoff program. We are even limited by TABOR (state law) from doing such a thing with property taxes without voter approval.

Aspen City Council has provided clear direction for a number of years to keep property tax revenues steady, which means we will be decreasing our mill levies in 2010 to collect approximately the same amount of revenue as in 2009. In fact, our early projections show we will be collecting less in 2010 than in 2009.
