City talks out of both sides of its mouth

Dear Editor:

I just watched the video of the last Aspen City Council meeting, which discussed the Castle Creek Energy Center. I was proud to see the council discuss the possibility of overturning Citizens v. United in Aspen. This topic came up in conversation about the Castle Creek Energy Center because multiple councilmen expressed concern about how some opponents of the hydropower project spent so much money (thousands of dollars) to get signatures on the referendum ballot.

Speaking of spending money, when the community votes on the energy center project in November, it will probably pass because the city will say (as it does in its

taxpayer-funded ads) that it already has spent $7 million. That sunken cost will have the greatest effect on people’s decisions.

So on one hand, the city is constantly spending money that will affect the energy center vote, and on the other hand it’s outraged that people are spending money to affect the energy center vote?

For the record, I don’t know enough about nonprofit-organization law to know if the opponents’ group is breaking any law, nor do I know if spending $7 million on a yet-to-be licensed project is illegal. But I think I know a double standard when I hear it.
