Christine “Christl” Brambach, 66, passed away on Aug. 6, 2010 in her home in Snowmass.
She was born in Vienna, Austria, on Dec. 19, 1943 and obtained her ski instructor certification in Saalbach, Austria. Christl came to Mt. Snow, Vt., in 1964 and taught skiing there until she moved to Snowmass in 1969, where she taught skiing for 40 seasons.
Christl met the love of her life, Robert Brambach, at the Snowmass Ski School and they were married in Seattle in 1972. In 1973-’74, Robert ran the Bridger Bowl ski school and Christl taught skiing there for one season. Robert and Christl traveled around Europe, skiing and spending summers in Spain.
Since 1988, Robert and Christl lived part of the year in Maui, indulging their shared passion for windsurfing and enjoying the camaraderie of their “beach family.” Early mornings found them walking along the beach or reading under the coconut palms. They spent the afternoons windsurfing the swells and waves. In the last few years, Robert spent more of his time painting, as he was a very accomplished artist, not only on canvas with oils but also with acrylics on the husks of coconuts.
Robert passed away on June 16, 2010 at the age of 86. In a variation of an island tradition, a gathering of Robert and Christl’s Maui friends sailed out beyond the reef last Sunday and cast orchids and hibiscus flowers out to sea to honor their spirits.
Christl was a true professional in the ski industry and created relationships with her clients that lasted for decades. Christl personified a special generation of ski instructor who could give to any skier, young or old, beginner or advanced, always doing an exceptional job and much loved by her clients and respected by her peers. She loved hiking in the mountains in summer and could be spotted daily along numerous local trails.
