China leads the way
July 28, 2011
Tom Friedman at the Ideas Festival spoke about China’s “ascension.” I just returned from China and Tibet. There is something about their government that struck me as logical. When they want to build a bridge, highway or museum, they just do it. No debates! What takes us years, they build in half the time.
Yes, they don’t like “dissent.” But they are more tolerant now than ever. Our “gridlock” democracy would be, if they tried it, a disaster for them. They take care of their poor and their schools are pretty good. I visited a first-grade class, which is like our fourth grade. They are taught math and English in the first grade. And, the children and teachers are very proud of their schools and country.
The Chinese learned a great deal from us. Maybe, just maybe, we can learn from them. Tom Friedman thinks so.
