Child is open-minded and ready to lead
I agree with the Pitkin County Democrats and nine current and former county commissioners who endorsed Steve Child for county commissioner when they said, “The people of this county are fortunate that Steve is willing to run.”
Although Steve’s record of environmental stewardship is beyond reproach, his opponent John Young has intimated that he would be soft on the natural-gas-extraction industry. Nothing could be further from the truth. Recent newspaper editorials would have us believe that the candidates should be willing to draw a line in the sand, go to war with the industry and take no prisoners even before anyone has even broached the subject in a public hearing. It’s attention-getting “bumper sticker” politics clearly but not good governance.
In reality this could be a good way to win a battle and lose the war. In my view the commissioners would be asking for trouble and leaving the county open to potential litigation if they leave the impression that they won’t even give the industry a fair hearing. I believe that Steve’s view is diplomatic and in line with the current commission when he says: “It would be my job as county commissioner to give anyone who comes before the board a fair chance prior to making a decision.”
If Mr. Young’s mind is completely made up on this issue, how many other issues has he already decided in advance without giving both sides a fair and impartial hearing?
Please vote for Steve Child for county commissioner.
