Dear Editor:

In a column dated Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, (“The Inaugural Climate Change”) Addison Gardner presented incorrect information. He stated that “mean ice anomaly, (difference between 1979 Arctic Sea ice levels and today’s) now stands at just under zero.” In fact, the University of Illinois graph Mr. Gardner cited includes the GLOBAL sea ice extent. Meanwhile, Arctic sea ice extent remains well below normal this winter. This is information is freely available from a number of websites, including the University of Illinois site that Mr. Gardner was probably referring to ( I understand that opinion columns may not be fact-checked by your staff, but I would expect that a professional journalist would check such information from the original source before publishing it.

I hope you will consider printing a correction to this misleading column.
