Check out the new Sundeck Saturday

Aspen Times Staff Report

At this time last year, local skiers were bemoaning the impending destruction of the venerable old Sundeck.

But this weekend they’ll be treated to their first glimpse of its replacement, during a grand opening of the new Sundeck.

The Aspen Skiing Co. is inviting everyone to tour the facility from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Visitors will be treated to wine and cheese, as well as guided tours. The public portion of the Sundeck will open for business on Monday, said Eric Calderon, project supervisor.

The grand opening will serve two purposes: locals will be able to tour the building before everyone else, and it will raise money for the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. Tickets for the event will cost $10, and all money will go to the club. The gondola will run until the event is over.

“We decided to make it a fund-raiser for the ski club, because unfortunately, the lack of snow forced us to cancel their regular fund-raiser day,” said Calderon.

The Skico usually opens Aspen Mountain a day early only to members and supporters of the ski club, a fund-raising tradition that goes back “many, many years,” said Toby Morse, director of the club.

“Not having the ski day was going to have a definite impact [on the club’s finances],” said Morse. “We were all standing around scratching our heads, trying to figure out how to recoup that money.”

That’s when Skico Vice President John Norton came up with the idea to turn the Sundeck grand opening into a fund-raiser, said Calderon.

“This will help recoup a portion of what we lost by not having that ski day, but it will still put a lot of pressure on us to host a successful pro-am event in March, said Morse.

Beginning Monday, skiers will be able to dine and rest at Benedict’s and the Sundeck cafeteria. The private club portion of the building should open in late February, said Calderon.
