Census Bureau opens Colorado office

The Associated Press
Aspen, CO Colorado

LAKEWOOD, Colo. ” The U.S. Census Bureau is opening its first Colorado office on Monday in preparation for the 2010 head count.

The office is in the Denver suburb of Lakewood.

Denver Regional Census Director Cathy Lacy Illian says the bureau is also hiring people to update its address list. They’ll use hand-held computers equipped Global Positioning Systems to verify, add and delete addresses.

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census be taken every 10 years. The information is used to distribute congressional seats, determine community services and distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.
