Celebrate Earth Day

Aspen Times Staff Report

The incentives for being earth-friendly abound today as the Roaring Fork Valley celebrates Earth Day.

The city of Aspen is joining with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies in celebration. The city’s Environmental Health Department will have a table on the first floor of City Hall with giveaways like mosquito repellent, recycled pens, water conservation kits and more.

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority will support cleaner air by encouraging the valley’s resident’s to leave their cars home and ride the bus. Everyone who rides the bus on Earth Day will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes like a round-trip ticket for two on the California Zephyr to San Francisco, concert tickets and CDs.

Raffle tickets will be given out by RFTA bus drivers, and winning numbers will be read on KSPN, KKCH, KNFO and KTUN, or can be checked at http://www.kspnradio.com.

Students, faculty and parents from Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale will host information booths in front of City Market in El Jebel and Carbondale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. The booths will educate the public on wind power, busing, car pooling, safe seafood, organic foods and safe home-cleaning solutions.

Toyota will bring two hybrid cars to display at the booths. The educational materials will include a sampling of environmental groups to join, and information on how to contact legislators about voting on key environmental issues.
