Caucus time in Colorado is Feb. 5

ASPEN ” Record numbers of Democrats and Republicans are expected to participate in area precinct caucuses Feb. 5, when registered party members can state their preference for the next president of the United States, as well as discuss a wide range of policy issues and ideas.

The Colorado caucuses are part of a broad political event dubbed Super Tuesday, in which voters from two dozen states will make their presidential preferences known.

According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, 52 percent of Democratic Party delegates and 41 percent of Republican Party delegates are at stake in the Feb. 5 primaries and caucuses.

Registered Colorado voters who affiliated with either of the two major political parties by the Dec. 5, 2007, deadline can participate in the local precinct caucuses. Independents and those who did not register by the deadline are welcome to attend the caucuses to observe, talk politics and experience the nation’s political process at the grassroots level.

The Pitkin County precinct caucuses will take place in Aspen for all Republicans and most Democrats. Republicans will meet at the Aspen Square Lodge meeting room in downtown Aspen. Light refreshments will be served. Democrats will meet at the Rio Grande meeting room, in the former Aspen Youth Center; the party’s county chairwoman, Camilla Auger, has achieved a reputation for the region’s best spread in terms of food and beverages. The only exception to the Aspen caucus locations will be the Democrats of Precinct 7, who will meet at the Woody Creek Community Center.

In Carbondale (Garfield County Precincts 1, 2, 3 and 4), Democrats will meet at Carbondale Middle School, and Republicans will meet at the new Roaring Fork High School.

In the Eagle County portion of the Roaring Fork Valley, meaning El Jebel and part of Basalt, all Democrats and Republicans will meet at the Eagle County Building in El Jebel.

Registration begins at 6 or 6:30 p.m. at most locations, after which caucus members will be grouped by precinct, and the caucusing will begin at 7 p.m. In the case of the Eagle County Republicans, the caucus officially will begin at 5:50 p.m. and end at 7 p.m., according to the party website.

The first item of business in most locations will be stump speeches on behalf of presidential candidates. Presidential preference polls will follow so that results can be reported to state party officials as early as possible and distributed to media outlets around the state and the nation.

Party members at all caucuses will elect a chair and a secretary for the precinct, as well as delegates to their respective county assemblies. Some delegates will be committed to support specific presidential candidates, while others can go as uncommitted delegates.

The delegates to the county assemblies then will choose delegates to the state and 3rd Congressional District party conventions, where delegates to the national conventions will be chosen.

Caucus members also will be polled regarding their preferences in local, state and congressional districts.

Information about the caucuses, including the names and phone numbers of precinct and caucus officers, locations and times of the meetings, as well as information about which precinct a voter is in, are available by telephone at the different county offices or on the county websites.
