Catering to the opera house crowd

Dear Editor:

Pertaining to the Jan. 31 Aspen Times article, “Bentley’s future on the rocks,” I would like to make a comment and a suggestion.

During the latest Wienerstube building council meeting, the members of the council were requiring a “crafted deed restriction system for affordable commercial space,” which I totally agree with. Then with almost the same breath, they turn around and talk about terminating the space of two affordable commercial businesses that they control.

They’re worried about the “vital” aspect of the restaurant and gallery in the Wheeler Opera House. So here’s what those businesses can do to please the flip-flopping city council.

Mia, who, by the way, should absolutely stay where she is, will have two different shows for her gallery, original oils and posters; then Bentley’s, one of the last of the diminishing blue collar hangouts, will have two different menus and two different uniforms for the employees.

On the nights, for example, when the Radiators play upstairs, Mia puts up the poster exhibit and the Bentley’s people wear T-shirts and jeans and display the regular menu.

Then on nights, let’s say, for example, when Itzhak Perlman takes the stage, Mia puts up the original oils and the Bentley’s folks don tuxes and break out the Red Mountain menu.

I think the new council is doing a great job. Let’s not stumble here.
