ASPEN – Repairs to Aspen’s Castle Creek Bridge will begin Monday, April 4 with preliminary work beneath the span that will not impact traffic, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Motorists will feel the impacts of the project starting Monday, April 11, weather permitting. The project, awarded to ABCO Contracting of Denver for $664,000, involves repairs to the 50-year-old bridge’s surface and substructure. It is expected to wrap up in late May.

Starting April 11, Highway 82 over the bridge will remain open in both directions until 9 a.m., Monday through Friday. After 9 a.m. on weekdays, upvalley traffic will remain on the bridge, but will experience periodic delays.

Downvalley traffic will be detoured onto Power Plant Road and Cemetery Lane starting April 11, after 9 a.m. The detour will remain in place for the afternoon commute, but Roaring Fork Transportation Authority buses and tractor-trailers will be routed across the bridge.

On weekends, downvalley traffic will be detoured 24 hours a day.

CDOT suggests bicyclists and pedestrians use the Marolt Trail during the bridge repair, or take the bus in and out of town. The trail crosses Castle Creek on a separate bridge.
