Carbondale’s critical problem

Dear Editor:(This was originally addressed to the Carbondale Town Council.)When I first moved here eight years ago, I supported Chief Schilling and his department. They were community oriented as they should be.For the past five years, I have been watching, with growing apprehension, our Carbondale P.D. going in the wrong direction. It has apparently acquired an Us vs. Them mentality. Sort of like TRIDENT has become our P.D.No longer do we have a partnership between the people and the men and women who police us. This is very dangerous for our community. The most recent and revealing incidences occurred during Mountain Fair, and indicate that something is seriously wrong and needs correcting immediately, before it gets any worse and something really bad happens. How did one of our fine young men get beaten up so badly?I strongly urge you to address this critical problem. Also, how did a well-known town volunteer wind up in such a questionable situation with an officer who knew him? There are too many things like this happening. I am sure you all know more.Valerie HarrimanCarbondale
