Carbondale video store owner presses eject button

CARBONDALE ” Sounds Easy Video, one of the longest-running independent businesses in Carbondale, will be closing this month unless someone comes along to buy the store.

Owner Staci Dickerson, who started the movie rental business in summer 1983, said a combination of the economic downturn and the growing number of online choices for home movie viewing led to her decision.

“The economy is certainly a big factor,” she said, adding the business has been down about 25 percent this year. “For me personally, I sort of saw the sign on the wall that it’s time to move forward and pursue some other ideas and dreams of mine.”



An aspiring artist, she plans to pursue a fine arts degree at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, taking classes during the school year and spending her summers in Carbondale.

“I’m just kind of throwing my sheet to the wind,” she said. “I’m not leaving Carbondale, it’s a big part of my life and all the people here, they’re an awesome family.”




Dickerson first opened the store downtown on Main Street in the Centennial Plaza, but about a year later moved to the Sopris Shopping Center near the busy corner of Main and Highway 133. She moved to a larger corner space in the same plaza about 10 years later and has been there ever since.

“I’ll give it a week to 10 days, and see if someone wants to talk to me about taking it over,” she said.

If not, she plans to start liquidating the inventory and close by the end of May.

“It all happened so quickly, it just caught me by surprise with the downturn and everything,” Dickerson said. “To be down 25 percent, that’s pretty substantial for any business.”

She said the prospect of a new movie rental store moving into town, perhaps across the street at the proposed new Village at Crystal River development, had little to do with her decision.

“In fact, if I were going to stick around I probably would consider moving to a location where there’s more traffic,” she said.

The bigger hit has been the change in consumer habits when it comes to home entertainment, especially online subscription services where people don’t even have to leave their home to pick a movie to watch.

“I don’t begrudge that business, it’s a really great model and it works well for some people,” Dickerson said. “There are just a lot of choices that are part of the pie these days that make it a lot tougher for video stores.

“I just had to make a decision to forward my life,” she said, “and I’m not real interested in trying to ride out the recession storm.”

Colorado River connectivity channel gets go-ahead after environmental assessment

Ten years after plans for a diversion route for the Colorado River around Windy Gap Reservoir outside of Granby was finalized, the project is a go. A consortium of state and commercial water entities announced Monday that in late June or early July, construction crews will begin excavating dirt from land adjacent to U.S. Highway 40, to fill in part of the existing reservoir and dredge a new path for the Colorado River to flow around it.
