Car stereos target in thefts

Aspen Times Staff Report

Local authorities are investigating a string of break-ins to vehicles Friday that netted nine car stereos.

The nine break-ins occurred in various locales throughout Pitkin County during the early morning hours last Friday, according to authorities.

Three of the cars were parked in the Holland Hills area, two vehicles were parked in a Snowmass Village lot, one car was parked at the base of Buttermilk, one car was parked at the Aspen Airport Business Center, one car was parked at an Emma Road residence, and another car was parked in a lot off Aspen Street in Aspen, authorities said.

Ron Ryan, the investigator with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office who’s handling six of the cases, said it’s unknown at this time whether the crimes are related.

“It appears, though, that their intent in breaking into the vehicles was for the stereo,” Ryan said. “A stereo was taken in all cases,” as well as sunglasses and other valuables that may have been in plain view, he added.

“Most of the vehicles had a window broken; otherwise the vehicle had been left unlocked,” Ryan said.

Ryan urged anyone who may have seen suspicious vehicles or persons in the areas where the thefts occurred early last Friday to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 920-5300.
