Candidate pool deep in Aspen High School principal search

ASPEN – More than three dozen people have thrown their hats into the ring to become Aspen High School’s next principal.

According to Aspen Superintendent John Maloy, the district received 39 applications for the position, left vacant in November after the abrupt resignation of Art Abelmann. Maloy said the candidates include a “wide range” of people in private industry, teachers, novice administrators and experienced administrators.

The pool will now be culled down based on those who meet or do not meet the minimum job requirements, which include a master’s degree, five years of teaching experience, principal or assistant principal experience, and holding or obtaining a Colorado Type D principal license.

“A second screening will then follow, which will include a much more thorough review of each candidate’s application and resume,” explained Maloy.

Among other things, the district will review the answers to the questions that were asked of each candidate on the application, the number of years the candidate served in a leadership role, the size and type of school where the candidate worked, and the responsibilities and skill set required in the past and present roles the candidate held. The district also will follow up on candidates’ references, Maloy said.

Those who make that next cut will be invited to do a long-distance interview via phone or Skype. As a result of a candidate’s performance during that interview, the person might be invited to the Aspen School District to meet with the three separate interview teams – parents, staff and students.

“The candidate’s visit to Aspen will be a full-day exercise including a meet-and-greet with staff members and parents, interview sessions and an assessment of the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of key educational practices and pedagogy,” Maloy said, noting that he will sit on all interview teams.

A selection team then will conduct a second interview with candidates chosen as finalists and make a recommendation to Maloy. He hopes to make a recommendation to the Aspen Board of Education in May, with the new principal taking the helm in July. Interim principal David Schmid, hired in January, will remain at the helm until the permanent principal is hired; Maloy would not comment on whether Schmid has applied for the job.
