Cages unleash offense

Dear Editor:

The Aspen baseball program just finished their 2010 season with another entrance to the playoffs, marking their second year in a row reaching post-season play. The program has seen substantial growth in the past three years.

In the 2009 high school playoffs, Aspen upset Lutheran, which was the No. 5 seed in the state. This year 18 players in the program traveled to Arizona for spring training. The growth of Aspen baseball could not have been met without the help of some key contributors.

We want to thank the Aspen Booster Club, Aspen Thrift Store, Dave Guthrie and the Elks Lodge. With their contributions the Aspen baseball program now has batting cages for indoor hitting, including one cage that allows pitchers to throw off an indoor mound to live hitters. Our offense has seen significant increases due to our community’s contributions.

In the 2009 baseball season we hit one home run. After the addition of our new batting cage, we hit 15 home runs in the 2010 season, with our captain, Taylor Mayer, ranking third in the conference in the category. We have very talented kids in our community, and their success is striding forward with our town’s support. Thanks again to the Aspen Booster Club, Aspen Thrift Store, Dave Guthrie and the Elks Lodge!
