Cadmium is cadmium
March 22, 2002
Now comes this guy from the University of Colorado who says there’s a “new” magnesium chloride, containing smaller amounts of cadmium and arsenic, that is not harmful like the stuff we slogged through here before.
This CU guy sounds like Monsanto before they started eating their words after being sued big-time. Or the tobacco industry before their crow arrived. Or even the crowd who sold us “the new Nixon.”
One thing about this CU guy. I bet he can get a job with the vendors of mag chloride when he takes state retirement. Personally, I just don’t want to walk through chemical goop containing carcinogens all winter no matter how safe it’s supposed to be.
Plus I don’t like even to look at it on the downtown streets, everything all frozen like Colorado in January, except these eerie blue/green liquid pools. Really yucky when you’re hung over.
The fact is that cadmium is a heavy metal carcinogen. It’s been shown in scientific studies to mutate tumor suppressor genes in some breast cancer cell lines, even at non-toxic levels.
But why argue? Why not put the issue to a vote and be done with it? Or do residents within the Aspen city limits have to keep going before the council every three months in perpetuity to “just say no”? Or is somebody going to have to phone up Erin Brockovich?
