Business leaders try more traditional approach to improve Carbondale economy

CARBONDALE – A group of Carbondale business owners is embarking on a more traditional effort to boost the local economy by bringing new business and jobs to town.

“We’re still working on our vision and mission, and a strategic plan,” said Dave Weimer, a local advisor with Edward Jones Investments.

“The issue has come up in discussions over the last six to eight months that now is the time to do something to bring jobs to Carbondale,” he said.

“There are a lot of people out of work, and people have moved away,” Weimer said. “We would like to see some type of coordinated activity directed toward bringing businesses to Carbondale.”

He and the other dozen or so local business leaders involved in the ad hoc effort will be working over the next three months to finalize the plan and make a presentation to the Carbondale Board of Trustees for potential funding.

The idea will be to focus on the town’s strengths, including outdoor and “green” industries.

“One of the things we anticipate doing is creating a team of people to go to trade shows to help sell the attributes of Carbondale,” Weimer said during a preliminary presentation to the Town Board last week.

“We have to get the Carbondale name out there, and what we have to offer,” he said.

Weimer said the goal will be to establish a public-private partnership, including funding from the town and various local business partners.

“This is not a short-term deal,” he said. “It may be years before we see the fruits of our labor, but if we don’t start now, we’ll never see it.”

Weimer said he expects to have a more refined plan to present to the town by early April.
