Bush should have learned

Dear Editor:

At the risk of being a “Johnny-One-Note,” this concerns the Middle East, Bush and the current slaughter of our young soldiers without good reason. I must relate a story of a sad, unhappy period in Aspen’s history. One that is likely to be on our horizon again!

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, there were crowds of fine-looking young men and women here protesting the useless war in Vietnam. Protests and sit-ins took place in Paepcke Park. Unwashed bodies among clouds of pot smoke and harangues by itinerant preachers of civic rebellion – even an Episcopal bishop from Los Angeles!

We locals tried to understand the hippies’ frustration of the “body bags” coming from the Far East. We tried to provide jobs and understanding. All to no avail!

Bush, himself, “dodged” service in LBJ’s and “Tricky Dicky’s” slaughter! He should have learned of the horrible waste of men and treasure then! John Kerry did, valiantly!
