Bus lanes mean traffic jams

Dear Editor:Vote NO on the bus lane ballot issue. The Aspen City Council (not citizens) has proposed two exclusive bus lanes be added to Highway 82 between Buttermilk and the roundabout. Exclusive bus lanes will not relieve traffic congestion. We need four lanes of traffic to relieve congestion. Perhaps a reversible third lane will suffice.A yes vote is equivalent to subsidizing RFTA at the cost of millions. I doubt it will significantly increase bus ridership. Once passed, proposing an alternative to solve congestion will take years. In the interim, we will be stuck with lengthy jams, stress and emitting thousands of pounds of pollution. RFTA claims buses will gain 20 minutes over the drivers stuck in traffic jams. With four lanes there wouldn’t be congestion and everyone gains 20 minutes, not just buses. Many in Aspen think the traffic jams will switch drivers to buses. It won’t and hasn’t happened. Drivers drive because they must. Drivers won’t change their habits because buses are faster or there are traffic jams. A no vote permits alternatives to be placed on the November ballot, which can solve congestion for everyone. The City Council has given us a single choice skewed to what they want and prevented us from voting on congestion-solving alternatives.Vote no on exclusive bus lanes to give us choices and eliminate congestion.Kip WheelerAspen
