Burton for certain, or, you could do worse

Dear Editor:

The top three ideas for the Burton For Certain campaign slogan contest were:

– All developers are scum.

– Yes, in your back yard.

– You could do worse.

The jury is still deliberating on a winner. In the meantime, here’s something I learned while covering Carbondale for 15 years as a newspaper reporter: The process is as important as the outcome. If trustees are honest and above board, and deal with each other and the public fairly, they can make informed decisions, and the town can live with the consequences. There’s no room for jive politics. Carbondale needs to understand this philosophy, as up to five new trustees may take office.

If elected, I’ll propose the town donate a substantial sum to KDNK’s $100,000 broadcast tower project. KDNK entertains and informs, and is also an important communications tool during emergencies.

I also think the town should keep real people answering real phones at Town Hall, and not install an automated system.

In my opinion, the general fund budget is Carbondale’s biggest issue, but I’m eager to discuss it with anyone who feels differently.

Please consider me for Carbondale trustee, and please vote April 6.

Thank you for your support.

Lynn Burton
