Burlingame design teams include host of familiar faces
Contenders to design and build Aspen’s Burlingame Ranch include an array of familiar names in local affordable housing.In all, the city received 12 proposals from teams vying to make the cut to three to five finalists that will be asked to design the housing project in a competition.”It looks like we’ve got some really hefty teams – hefty, as in they do a lot of development business,” said Michelle Bonfils, city project manager. The deadline to submit qualifications was Friday. The city put out a request for proposals, or RFP, a packet of material outlining the project that 69 different firms ultimately purchased. Many of them are collaborating, bringing together architects, planners, contractors, engineering firms and whatever other expertise is needed to produce an entry in the design competition and, ultimately, build the project. Most of the teams include players from various disciplines.Burlingame Ranch will include up to 330 homes west of town; 110 lots and housing units are slated for the first phase.The lead entities for the teams that have submitted their qualifications are: Bald Mountain Development, Burlingame LLC of Old Snowmass; Valeo Companies of Anaheim, Calif.; Amako Parkhill-Ivins Design/Build Team of Golden; Elliot Mahoney Architecture of Park City, Utah; Fenton Construction, Aspen; Shaw-Poss Architecture & Planning-DHM Design, Aspen; The Communities Group Development Services LLC of Washington, D.C.; Hansen Construction, Aspen; Jonathan Rose Companies LLC, Denver; The Bitterroot Group of Big Sky, Mont.; Federal Aspen Associates of Washington, D.C.; and ASW Realty of Steamboat Springs.ASW is the lead firm for the team that won the city’s design competition for its Parcel D housing project, now under construction next to the Aspen Business Center. Also on the ASW team for Burlingame is Civitas, a Denver urban design/planning firm that helped produce the winning design for Aspen Mass, a housing project that never went forward.The Jonathan Rose Companies team includes Curtis and Associates; principal Jim Curtis has long been a development consultant on affordable housing and was a member of the inaugural housing board created to oversee the Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority.The Shaw/Poss team includes Economic Planning Systems Inc., which produced a housing master plan for the city in 2002, and Lamont Planning Services; Leslie Lamont was a consultant on Obermeyer Place, a multiuse project that includes affordable housing.Fenton Construction was the contractor for the city’s Seventh & Main housing and is currently building Pitkin County’s Stillwater affordable housing. Also on the Fenton team is Novy Architects; Steve Novy worked on the design of Stillwater as a former employee of Michael Fuller Architects.Elliot Mahoney Architecture worked on the affordable housing at Five Trees.On the Valeo team is Eco Build of Boulder, which did some early consulting on environmentally friendly construction at Burlingame Ranch.The Bald Mountain team includes a number of players who worked together to produce a Parcel D design that was not selected by the City Council: Studio B Architects, The Weitz Co. of Glenwood Springs and planning firm Blue Green LLC, led by housing board member Sheri Sanzone.Studio B also designed the Seventh & Main housing.Sopris Engineering, also on the Bald Mountain team, did work on the expansion of the city’s Truscott Place housing.Bald Mountain Development is made up of David Parker and Scott Writer, principals in Four Peaks Developments, which is developing the Hyatt Grand Aspen timeshare hotel.Rocky Mountain Institute, an Old Snowmass think tank on green building and energy efficiency, is a member of six different teams.The teams that participate in the competition will each be awarded a $30,000 contract for the work; they should be chosen later this month.
